Northolt PDU rescue
Leading UK facilities management provider ISS called on Metropolitan Services to respond to an emergency situation at a large colocation data centre. With smoke emitting from the power transformer of a power distribution unit, we quickly despatched our specialist panel contractor to work with specialists from ISS’ in-house installation and power monitoring division.
The Metropolitan solution
We responded to the emergency callout from ISS in the early evening. On inspection, the team discovered that the existing power distribution panel isolating transformer had a loose connection on the output side. This resulted in a high resistance joint that caused the transformer and local output breaker to fail.
We found later that the moulded case circuit breaker (MCCB) that feeds specific distribution boards on the power distribution unit was badly burnt. On inspection, we discovered that the three cables entering the MCCB and the base/switch needed replacing and testing.
Our engineers rectified this issue and replaced all internal cabling that had been damaged from the failure. They then re-inspected and tested the panel and affected breaker.
The site maintenance contractor reinstated the critical power distribution unit and restored the UPS resilience to the affected COLO data centre space.
From call out to restoration, the client was back on line within 10 hours. Not only were they extremely pleased with the fast and effective solution that we provided, ISS was also very complimentary of our services:
“From a site management perspective, all the way through to the specialist external support services in Metropolitan Services, it was a great example of when things go very bad, how a disaster can be turned into a great success story.
“The client is truly indebted to have both personnel, teams and an external support specialist to rely upon at very short notice.
On behalf of all of us, THANK YOU.”
